The 57th Grammy Awards Review

The 57th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday were a mixture of old songs, new faces and upsets, as Sam Smith, a 22-year-old British singer barely known to American audiences a year ago, won three of the top four prizes, and Beck became the dark-horse victor of album of the year.

Kendrick Lamar and Eminem split the four rap trophies. Mr. Lamar, a fast-rising young star who had walked away empty-handed last year, took best performance and song this year for “I.” Eminem won best rap album for “The Marshall Mathers LP 2” and shared best rap/sung collaboration with Rihanna, for “The Monster.”

Kanye West, dressed in a velvety red jumpsuit and a thin gold chain, was barely illuminated by a low spotlight as he sang “Only One,” his voice warped by electronics.

Among the night’s other big winners, Pharrell Williams took home three prizes: “Happy” won best music video and, in a live version, best pop solo performance, while his “G I R L” won best urban contemporary album.

Beyoncé,  had been up for a total of six awards, also won three: best R&B performance and R&B song, for “Drunk in Love,” and best surround sound album, for “Beyoncé.”

Accepting the award for best R&B performance, Beyoncé thanked God and her husband, Jay Z, who appears on the track. But she made sure to thank her fans as well, with whom she keeps in constant contact through social media.

“I’d like to say thank you to my Beyhive,” she said. “Thank you guys for riding so hard.”

Some of the highlights definitely were Beyonce‘s tribute to the movie Selma alongside John Legend. The best performances came last. Beyoncé capped a ceremony that wasn't short on social commentary with a gospel song that was a favorite of Martin Luther King Jr. She ended her rendition introducing Legend and Common, who found inspiration for Glory in King and today's protests — and who performed, indeed, gloriously, accompanied by a full string section and choir.

Perhaps searching for a new twist on a song that seems to never go away, Pharrell performed his hit "Happy" and inserted an international flavor and weirdly dark tone, reinforced by Lang Lang's dissonant piano solo a couple of minutes in. But the choruses remained upbeat while the orchestra members wore yellow.

Superstars Rihanna, Kanye West, and Paul McCartney performed "FourFiveSeconds" with no flash, no one trying to upstage the others. Add some buoyant harmonies, and you have a refreshingly simple and truly rousing number.

One unexpected stir brought some drama to the stage. As Prince (dressed in an incredible bedazzled orange jumpsuit in all his glory) announced Beck’s “Morning Phase” as the winner of Album of the Year, Kanye West jumped on stage to protest the surprising win.  The whole world held its breath for the microsecond when the rapper lunged towards Beck, anticipating another Taylor Swift moment.

But instead of jumping to Beyoncé’s defense (which would have been justifiable — her self-titled album was incredible), Kanye stepped back. A surprised Beck begged Kanye to come back on stage (likely in agreement that he didn’t deserve the award), but Yeezy joined his jilted friends back in the audience. The three-second interaction felt like a million years, and the result was the most hilariously awkward moment of the night.

Rapper Rakim Looks To Collaborate With Fellow Hip Hop Game-Changers Jay-Z & Dr. Dre Again

Rakim-new

New York rapper Rakim recently sat down with WHO? MAG TV and revealed that he is interested in working with rap icon Jay-Z, and super-producer Dr.Dre again on a follow-up collaboration to their 2002 track "The Watcher 2." The track was originally featured on Jay-Z's Blueprint 2: The Gift & The Curse album and sported by bars from Dr. Dre and Rakim in addition to Truth Hurts' vocals.

Rakim told WHO? MAG TV:

That was a Dre project, man. A joint that I did for Dre. Jay Z heard it and the rest is history, man. It was definitely a good, little get together with me and Dre. You know what I mean? And hopefully we’ll do it again, man. 2014. Ya heard Jay? Ya heard Dre? Let’s do it, man. 2015, the new ‘Watcher.’ Keep watching.

The "I Ain't No Joke" rapper told XXLMag.com back in August 2013 that he was currently working on an album. While the release date is still unknown, if all goes well with the legendary MCs possibly reuniting in the studio, the trio could be gracing our ears with one lethal track once again!

Check out Rakim's take on The Watcher 2" in his WHO? MAG TV interview

Young Jeezy Set To Drop "Seen It All" Album, On September 2nd.

Look at that album cover! Does it look familiar to you? You've seen that "eye" on the US dollar bill, and what a lot of people don't seem to realize about that eye is, well, it's evil. However, many people DO recognize the fact that it is in fact, a symbol of "Illuminati."

Not here to talk about that, tho. But I will how ever say that I lost a ton of respect for Jeezy.

Young Jeezy has been one of my favorite rappers, for sure. His new hit single featuring Jay-Z titled "Seen It All" has been one of my favorite songs to listen to lately. See, I would've given this album a shot. I was very much looking forward to it, but unfortuneatly, Jeezy f'ed up, in my eyes at least.

I cannot support someone who represents EVIL. I'm sure I do support plenty of artists who do live by this satanic shit, but they don't put it out there, so CARELESSLY, like that. That was just pure ignorant and disrespectful.

There's no denying talent. If a song/record is good, then it is what it is. I give credit when it is due, but I've decided to not give this a chance. I'm sure whichever his next single will be, I will eventually hear and if I like it, I like it. The only thing left I have to say is, WHAT a disappointment! Very surprised he didn't have a collaboration with the QUEENS of the Illuminati themselves, Rihanna and Iggy Azalea. It's reasons like THIS, besides lacking talent, that I choose not to support such mainstream commercial "artists," by promoting them on my website.

Common Talks Possible Collaboration With Nas & Reminisces On The Time Jay Z Attended One Of His Shows

929168_301546866683239_1504727929_a

Hip Hop great, Common, recently spoke with Dharmic X of WNYU's #NW3Radio to discuss his latest ventures and deep knowledge of having hustle and flow within the Hip Hop game. Beside discussing his Nobody's Smiling track "Rewind That" and the passing of his good friend, rapper James "J Dilla" Yancey, the Chicago native also shed some light on the possibility of doing a collaborative project/album with fellow rapper Nas.

Common told Dharmic X:

"I would love too, man. Nas is one of the coldest, so I would love to and I’mma put it out there that at some point Nas and I will do a project together."

"The 6th Sense" rapper also revealed a little fun fact about a run-in he had with rapper Jay Z.

"One thing I do remember is one time it was not even a packed house and Jay Z was at the show and we was performing for like only one-fourth of a crowd, but Jay Z he stayed there pretty much the whole show. And it was like an honor to have him there. And this is like mid-90s right when he was coming up too, like ’97."

Common is just an all around good guy. By staying humble in addition to collaborating with legends like Nas, he's got a good chance to stay true to his sound while adding some extreme mainstream media play to his lineup.

Collaborations Hip-Hop Deserved

(Image: offthecorner.net)

Hip-hop music is a beautiful torture sometimes. As much as the genre makes people from around the world understand the struggles of people from different areas of the country, sometimes as hip-hop fans, we're robbed of the opportunity to get what we want from the artists we love. I know I know, I sound selfish because hip-hop has given us so much already. But hip-hop artist love giving fans teasers with collaborations that are so amazing that it makes us as fans fiend for more. So I started thinking about what collaboration I’ve always wanted to hear. And it’s unfortunate to think about it because they’ll likely never happen. But it’s still fun to think about who I want to see make an album together as a duo. So I came up with a short list. And I think hip-hop would have been both blessed and spoiled from these albums had they been created by these genius tandems.

South Bronx…South South Bronx…

One of my favorite lyricists of all time is Boricua legend Big Punisher from the Terror Squad. The man’s bars and lyrics were out of this world, and verse for verse Pun could match anyone in my opinion. Every bar Pun spit in his debut album Capital Punishment was delivered with the precision of a surgeon. Anyone who got on a track with Pun knew it was survival of the illest. He had the perfect flow, and his breath control for a man of his size were only matched by that of the late great Notorious B.I.G. Pun was the co-leader of TS along side fellow Bronx Native Fat Joe. People don’t ever seem to rate Joe highly when it comes to best MC’s ever out of New York, but if you go back and listen to Jealous Ones Envy and Don Cartegena, it’s evident Fat Joe’s rhyme ability can’t be questioned. Between Joe’s gritty NYC style, and Puns penchant for destroying any beat he got on, a collaboration album between the two would have been special for NYC and hip-hop in general. Unfortunately the rap game lost Big Pun in 2000, and the dream I had of this happening ended then. But I think had these two done an album together, that collaboration would have been special.

Straight From The 213…

And Imma snatch your ass from the backside and show you how Death Row pull off that hoopride/ Now you might not understand me/Cause I’m a rob you in Compton and blast you in Miami” – Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. The 1990’s run that Death Row records had with its core three rappers of Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg is legendary. Snoop was a young upstart with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove to the rap world. Dr. Dre was a young veteran that knew how to get the best out of every artist he ever worked with. Whenever Snoop and Dre were in the studio together it was instant magic. From Nothing But A G Thang to Still D.R.E., the two west coast legends never let fans down when they worked together. I wish we could get a Dre and Snoop album, and since both rappers are still in the studio, it’s always a possibility. But at this point I think it’s more of a pipe dream. Dre has been teasing us with a new solo album for the better part of a decade, and Snoop isn’t the Snoop of old. I would still listen to an album with those two on it, but it’s anyone’s guess what it would actually sound like now. Missed opportunity in the 90’s for both Death Row and hip-hops fans in general.

It’s Panero and Kiss...Two-Thirds of A Brick…

Is there a better tag-team partnership in rap more fun to listen to than Stylez P and Jadakiss from the LOX? The sheer brashness, bravado, grit, and bars that come when these two get on a track together is jaw dropping. You remember the “Fiesta” remix freestyle they put out in the early 2000’s? I still listen to that regularly. To be honest I listen to all the LOX stuff regularly, but there’s nothing better than listening to Kiss and Stylez go back and forth. Every time I listen to Banned From TV I can’t help but think why on Earth did these two never put out any material together as just a duo. Maybe they never did it out of respect for Sheek Louch. Or maybe they just never thought about a Kiss and Stylez album. I know I have been thinking about it for years, and if they dropped that album tomorrow I would be the first to cop it. C’mon LOX, give us a new LOX album and then hit us with the Kiss and Stylez album. We’re here waiting.

From Marcy To Hollywood And Back Again…Back Again…

It doesn’t matter if I was never signed to the Roc/ because me and Jay we were both signed to the Block” – Sauce Money. Why did Jay-Z never see it fit to sign Sauce Money to Roc-A-Fella records I don’t know, but early in his career, Jay and Sauce Money were absolutely lights out when they jumped on a track together. They’ve both said they are really close friends, and during Jay’s first two albums Sauce Money was there for all of the recordings. Sauce Money is even featured on Jigga’s classic debut album Reasonable Doubt. And I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the best track from Reasonable Doubt was “Bring it on” featuring Sauce Money and Jaz-O. Sauce said the reason the track came out so legendary was because each rapper knew they had to outdo the other or at least try to keep up, and that’s what fueled their bars. That track is my favorite from Reasonable Doubt, and that was the genesis of my thought that Jay and Sauce Money needed an album together. But between Jay building Roc-A-Fella, and his obsession to make Memphis Bleek the next great rapper, Jay lost sight of his partnership with Sauce Money. It’s unfortunate because I think Sauce would have been the best rapper on Roc-A-Fella after Hov himself. I have no idea if they would have ever done an album together, but we would have had more Jay and Sauce money records. What could have been. “Sigh”

Life’s A Bitch And Then You Die…

Last but definitely not least on my list of dream album collaborations is the legendary Nasir Jones, and the legendarily underappreciated AZ. Is there anything in rap history more calming and insightful than listening to Nas and AZ on a track together. It’s poetry listening to those two. There are no punch lines, no happy raps, no non-sense Tom Foolery when those two get together. The masses become more intelligent when listening to these two MC’s together. They don’t try to outdo each other, nor does it ever seem as if either is trying to be great on the track; it just comes out that way. It’s two brothers on the same track with the intelligence of Harvard Professors. An album with Nas and AZ seemed like nothing more than mere formality in the 90’s. I was sure it was coming sooner than later, and I’m pretty sure the hip-hop world thought so as well. But 20 years after Nas’ debut classic illmatic, there’s still no album. And at this point it’s safe to say hip-hop will never see anything more than random collaborations between the two lyrical titans. Maybe it wasn’t meant to be, and maybe as intelligent as these two are they knew their combined talents would not mesh for an entire album. We needed and still need more from these two, but since it may never happen, we must just enjoy the few records they’ve given us.

Those are the albums that I would have loved to see. Luckily I was able to get a Royce Da 5’9 and Eminem album in my lifetime and for that I’m grateful. I’m not holding my breath for any of the duo’s above (not counting Pun because that’s an impossibility) but who knows. Maybe, just maybe hip-hop can get one of these albums in these rappers lifetimes. Fingers crossed.

Jay Z's Alleged Mistress Releases A Beyoncé Diss Track Titled 'Sorry Mrs. Carter'

9a2f49a8a5bf11e2a2f822000a9e0707_7

Talk about bad timing. There's definitely some trouble lurking to end The Carters' paradise. Reports have been flying left and right about Beyoncé and Jay Z on the verge of a divorce after having quite a bumpy ride these past couple of months. The music moguls have yet to address the accuracy of these rumors but their passionate connection on stage during their 'On The Run' tour and appearances out and about with their daughter Blue Ivy seem to prove otherwise. Contrary to The Carters' affectionate actions, a rapper named Liv is claiming that Hip Hop's Bonnie and Clyde are not as happy as they claim to be.

In the past, Liv has been accused by tabloids of being Jay Z's mistress and she has recently decided to set the record straight once and for all. On August 4, the aspiring rapper posted a diss track to her Youtube channel titled "Sorry Mrs. Carter" aimed directly at Queen Bey. Although the woman admits she never had sexual relations with Jay Z, she claims that he prefers "flawless model chicks" like her. On top of all the cockiness that she spits on the track, Liv brags that  Jay Z wanted to sleep with her and claims he still thinks about her today.

Whether what this female claims is true or not, it's about time Beyoncé start putting these chicks back into there place because the disrespect towards her marriage has gotten too real.

Watch the Beyoncé diss track here.

Lil Kim DISSES Nicki Minaj on a BRAND NEW "Flawless" Remix!

So literally about a DAY after Beyoncé dropped her new remix to "Flawless" featuring Nicki Minaj, Lil Kim has dropped her own verse, and didn't have many nice things to say. It appears as if she was taking shots at SOMEONE, and by the subliminals she threw, it sure as hell sounds like she's talking about NICKI!

Take a look at the link below, to listen to Kim's verse on the new remix! Who do YOU think Kimmie is dissin?

Beyoncé Gives Her Take On The Elevatorgate Fight Between Solange & Jay Z On The "Flawless (Remix)"

Surprise, surprise! Beyoncé fans literally woke up and got flawless — the "Flawless (Remix)" that is. Queen Bey must have a fascination with releasing exciting, new projects in the middle of the night because a little after 1:00 am on August 3 is when she posted the remix to this pretty girl anthem featuring raptress Nicki Minaj on to her website. Mrs. Carter's alter ego Sasha Fierce totally made an appearance to set fire to this track as Bey turned her original sweet and seductive sound into a bars of a blunt,high-heel walking boss. Beyoncé was so confident on this track that even she addressed the elevatorgate scandal  — when a video surveillance camera recording of Beyoncè's sister Solange attacking her husband Jay Z at the Standard Hotel the night of the Met Gala leaked online and was published by TMZ.

Beyoncé sings:

"We escalate, up in this b-tch like elevators/ Of course sometimes sh-t go down/ When it’s a billion dollars on an elevator/ Of course sometimes sh-t go down/ When it’s a billion dollars on an elevator."

Teaming up with an out-of-the-box artist like Nicki Minaj gave Beyoncé a chance to get out of her comfort zone and let the critics know that she's has problems just like you but the difference is she's high up on the salary totem pole. This lethal record comes at a good time since various reports have surfaced of The Carters allegedly being on the verge of a divorce. As of now, both Solange and Beyoncè have individually addressed the incident outside of the press release that their management teams released after the story broke. The only person left for us to hear from is Jay Z. I'm curious to hear his side of the story in a track just as hard as Bey's "Flawless (Remix)" release.

Check out Beyoncè on the "Flawless(Remix)" ft. Nicki Minaj here.

Cassidy Reveals Jay Z Set Up His 2001 Rap Battle Versus Philly Rapper Freeway & More In VladTV Interview

Cassidy recently let fans in on a little secret about his freestyle battle back in 2001 versus fellow Philadelphia native Freeway.  In a recent interview with VladTV, the rapper reveled that the battle was actually organized by Hip Hop legend Jay Z. Although Cassidy was never close with Hov, he was able to spend this time with him by networking through both of the rappers' good friend super-prouder Swizz Beatz.
Cassidy told VladTV:
"The most time me and Jay Z spent around each other talking was the Freeway battle thing. He the one that set it up. It was me, him and Swizz in the studio before it all went down, so that was the time I really spent the most time around him and really talked to him and all that sh-t."
The "I'm a Hustla" rapper also touched on the current state of Hip Hop in his interview. When asked by VladTV if he believes there is enough lyricism in the game today, Cassidy did not hesitate to relieve his thoughts on the sad reality of the industry.
"Hell no, of course not. It’s definitely not. And you know, that’s the main things I love about hip-hop. Some people like hip-hop for flows. Some people like hip-hop for beats. But what overrules all of that is lyrics, bars. That’s what I like more than anything, and I feel as though it ain’t enough of that."
In addition to the freestyle battle revelation and his comments on the state of Hip Hop today, Cassidy told VladTV that he still believes he has the best bars in the game.

New York Post Claims Beyonce & Jay Z Are On The Verge Of A Divorce

   10549598_628529633920965_1264009453_a

Beyoncé and Jay Z may be on the run from more than just their joint summer tour.  New York Post's Page Six is reporting that The Carters are currently on the run from each other. According to their unidentified source, Bey and Jay's marriage is on the rocks and Jay Z is doing all he can to save it although he is supposedly the one at fault.

Seeing as how Beyonce has been dangerously in love, crazy in love, and even drunk in love with her husband of six years, there is much speculation revolving around the truth of this report - but we'll let you decide for yourself.

The NY Post reports:

Beyoncé and Jay Z have more than 99 problems and only “divine intervention” can save the troubled marriage, a source close to the powerful couple has told The Post.

While Jay Z seemingly is the one most at fault, he’s also the one doing all in his power to keep the couple together, even hiring marriage counselors who are believed to be traveling with the super duo on their tour, the source said.

“They are trying to figure out a way to split without divorcing . . . This is a huge concert tour and they’ve already gotten most of the money from the promoters up front,” the source said.

Despite the tens of millions the couple will pocket from the current tour, this will certainly be their last and the end of the tour could officially spell the end of the marriage, the source said.

“There are no rings, if you haven’t noticed,” the source said, admitting that he thought things would get better after the birth of the couple’s daughter, Blue Ivy Carter.

“For just a split moment, things got real for them and she was even talking about adding to the family,” the source said.

“But, after a while, Jay was out doing Jay and Bey was out doing Bey. They made the classic mistake of thinking a child would change everything and help to rekindle the initial fire, and it didn’t.”

Being that Page Six does not have the best rapport when it come to blind items, the details surrounding this report still seem to good to be true. Like really . . who would ever want to see America's favorite power couple fold and crumble over a couple of bumps in the road? Do you really believe that Hip Hop's Bonnie and Clyde are on the verge of total destruction?

But when contract conversations do come up, which won't take place until before the 2017 season at the earliest, Roc Nation spokesman Ron Berkowitz said Jay Z and Perez plan on negotiating the pitcher's Roc Nation Sports, the sports agency started by Jay Z, has signed New York Yankees starting pitcher, CC Sabathia, and will represent him on and off the field.

The agency's official Twitter account tweeted a picture of Sabathia signing with the firm:

This photo was running wild on social media last night. Sabathia not only tweeted this, but also posted it on his official Instagram account. This seems to be a "trend." First, Cano signed with Roc Nation last year, and now Sabathia.

Which athlete are you expecting to sign with Jay-Z, and Roc Nation next?

MLB OffSeason Saga

Its been a pretty crazy offseason. The Winter Meetings have just begun, and some of the best free agents have been picked up REAL quick. The most talked about free agent has been second baseman, Robinson Cano, who reportedly asked the Yankees for a 9 year deal in the 250-260 million dollar range. Rumors were circulating that the Seattle Mariners were interested in signing Cano. The big question was, will Robbie & his agent, rapper Jay-Z, stay in New York? Is Cano important enough to this team and worth a 10 year deal? Many speculate that Alex Rodriguez "ruined" any future 10 year deals since his alleged PED use, and possible suspension for the upcoming 2014 season, with another 3 years remaining on his contract.

The first free agent the Yankees signed, is former Atlanta Braves catcher, Brian McCann. McCann, who turns 30 this February, agreed to a 5 year, 85 million dollar deal. Great move.

Next, the Yankees agreed to sign a 7 year deal worth 153 million, with Red Sox free agent, Jacoby Ellsbury. This shook things up, and everyone was pretty sure that afer signing a huge deal like this, the Yankees were CERTAINLY NOT going to give Cano what he wanted.

Former Seattle Mariner, infielder Brenden Ryan & the Yankees agree to a 2 year deal worth 5 million.

Yankees signed former Rays infielder Kelly Johnson, to a one year deal with 2.6 million.

Having these 2 makes up for the infield and possibly fills the spot of Robinson Cano.

Yankees resign starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda to a one year deal, worth 16 million.

Cano and the Seattle Mariners agree to a 10 year deal worth 240 million. Thanks for the favor, but I am completely sickened by this. How do you play your whole career with this organization, get this huge ego out of no where and think your worth close to 300 million dollars? This unloyal piece of garbage can rot there, with his scumbucket new "agent,"
Jay-Z. The next move is where the Yankees COMPLETELY made up for losing Cano.....

Former St Louis Cardinals outfielder, Carlos Beltran agrees to a 3 year deal worth 45 million. This overpopulates the outfield. With the new signing of Ellsbury, you now have Gardner, Suzuki, and Soriano, not to mention, Curtis Granderson.

Granderson signs a 4 year deal with the Mets worth 60 million. Huge loss. With his bat coming through clutch, his speed in the outfield and stealing bases, and being a great guy in the clubhouse, im sad to see him go. But, the fact that the Yankees made up for this move, I dont have a problem with it. I didn't lose any respect for Granderson for choosing to leave the Yankees. He isnt full of himself & knows his worth, unlike that other piece of garbage.

Roy Halladay decides to retire with the Blue Jays after this year.

Current free agent and most recently, Yankees infielder Kevin Youkillis is reportedly not interested in returning with the Yankees for the 2014 season.

Bartolo Colon signs with Mets, 2 years, 20 million. DEFINITELY not worth all that money. I'm wondering if the Mets will use him as a starter or a reliever.

Phil Hughes signed a 3 year deal worth 24 million. With him gone, that takes a lot of pressure off the bullpen.

Joba Chamberlin, thankfully signed a 1 year deal worth 2.5 million, with the Detroit Tigers.

Boone Logan is signing a 3 year deal with the Colorado Rockies worth 14 million. Perfect! With these 3 dopes outta the bullpen, this gives me so much hope for the 2014.

Brett Gardner is on the trade bait list. However the Yankees are not DYING to get rid of him, unless its really worth it. The Reds expressed interest in Gardner as they were willing to trade infielder Brandon Phillips. The Yankees, however, declined this offer by simply comparing the stats from last season, as Gardner has better numbers. It is also being said that Phillips could be difficult in the clubhouse.

So the big question I have here is, where is the pitching? I was hoping the Yankees would sign a few starters before signing all these fielders and good bats. Sure we DO need that, but we need pitching first. Thats priority. Supposedly Brian Cashman isnt finished making moves....lets see what happens.
