Across five albums and nearly two decades since, Trina has continued to play the same role for a generation of women. Fans love her contagious confidence, her commitment to emotional honesty, how she can rock a skintight red carpet dress.
With her vocal support of other women, her willingness to switch between vulnerable and powerful, her unspoken pledge to do things on her own terms, she has slated herself as a powerful female figure in hiphop.
Earlier this week, Trina signed with Penalty Entertainment, home to eMC and others. The Miami rapper is scheduled to release her sixth album later this year, a project featuring the single “The Real One” with Rico Love and released in conjunction with her own Rockstarr Music Group.
This week, Trina dropped two singles from her still-untitled sixth album. The first song is an unlikely Bill Withers-sampling party anthem that features T-Pain and Young Cash. The second, is a rap ballad with a Rico Love hook. On it, Trina laments over failed romances and her habit of consistently choosing the wrong men, with lyrics that will prompt yet more discussions about the very public end of her sort-of relationship with French Montana. Together, though, the two songs suggest that she's willing to try anything to make her next project stick.
Trina herself commented on the news, letting fans know that she is ready to bring things to the next level musically. “This is the beginning of a new direction and stage within my career,” adding, “I am beyond excited to share this phase with the world as I continue to evolve.”
This will be Trina’s first album since 2010’s Amazing, which peaked at Number 13 on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart. Since then, Trina has released a series of mixtapes, some of which have been promoted with the release of singles. 2015 will be a busy year for the rapper, who is also working on starring in a docudrama series.
